Moving from breast or bottle to an open cup

One of the most common questions we get in the shop is how to successfully weaning a baby from breat or bottle onto a cup. It seems that every single mum has bought virtually every cup or beaker on the market; non-spill, free flow, hard spout, soft spout or no spout it feels like all of them are lacking something.

For what its worth, we usually advise a two stage approach - use a doidy cup for the very first sips of water or milk and then for independent drinking or for taking a drink out and about we feel you can do no better than a thermos fliptop beaker.

The doidy cup has been around for a long time now but its clever sloping design makes it very easy for babies to judge where the surface of their drink is and so helps them to decide how much to tip and reduces spill. A word of warning though - Doidy cups are definately not a no-spill cup!

Second hand washable nappies - now in store

Our baby shop in tavistock has always been a bit of a treasure trove of those practical little things that you need when you have children. Everything from lilypadz (Mrs T's favourite reusable breast pad), baby food (all organic natch!), real nappies, feeding accessories and books on all subjects from pregnancy to sleep problems, to baby food recipes and cooking for kids.

Over the last year we have been working hard to expand the second hand baby clothes and toys selection in the shop. If you live near us in Tavistock you can sell all your baby and childrens clothes and toys through us (we take a commission on the final sale price) but we do love the second hand nappy section. We are always looking for used motherease, tots bots and other good quality cloth nappies. Don't forget we also sell new nappies both on the nappy rush website and from our shop.

Highlights of our current second hand stock include a great graco double buggy, lots of motherease wraps in various sizes, imse vimse nappies, a couple of lovely genuine paul smith dresses (age 4-5). Grobags in various sizes are always coming into the store (and going out again).

For the time being, if you are not within striking distance of our shop in Tavistock, I suggest phoning or emailing to see if we have you specific requirements in stock. I'm investigating the best way to put used items onto the website so watch this space and soon you may be able to take your pick of fantastic second hand baby clothes and accessories from the comfort of your own home.

New products - Tots Bots Easy Fit all in one nappies

We've been busy adding the fantastic new Easy Fit all in one nappies from Tots Bots to the website. These great looking all in one nappies are the easiest way to use real nappies. Not only do you not have to worry about separate wraps and liners and all that faff but they are one size from birth to potty training so you don't have to fork out on a whole new set of nappies after a year.

Tots Bots have addressed the traditional problem of slow drying associated with these types of nappies by offering an easy fit nappy with a fast drying polyester fluffle interior.

These new all in one nappies with aplix fastening are sure to be a popular addition bothto the website and in our Devon shop (where you can buy organic baby food, feeding accessories, second hand maternity and baby clothes)

I hate to mention it but Christmas is coming

I know it still feels like ages away but with half term here shortly then halloween, the countdown to christmas will begin in earnest very shortly. It is a time of year I love and I always cook the full on Christmas meal with trimmings but I have to admit to not enjoying the shopping and all the run up.

Still that doesn't stop us getting into the spirit of things in our Tavistock shop and we always increase the number of toys and presents at this time of year. We like to continue with the food and cooking theme so there are a selection of lovely wooden play food items on the Kiddies Kitchen website plus children's cookery items like children's aprons, mini wooden spoons and rolling pins and some great cookie cutters.

We love the Janod wooden play kitchen and fruit stall as well. Imgainative play is a great way for children to learn about the wider world and these are the perfect props to fire their minds!

Or you could take a look at our unique personalised lunch boxes on our dedicated lunchbox site www.lunchboxesetc.co.uk. They really would make a lovely gift for any child who doesn't like packed lunches.....

Weaning - with Ella's Kitchen Baby food

Our orginal website, the Kiddies Kitchen baby food delivery service, is still going strong now, having just reached its third anniversary. One of the most popular lines on the site is the Ella's Kitchen baby food range. We are one of the few places you can buy the whole range right from the stage one baby food pouches, through the slightly lumpier stage 2 baby food range and the new stage 3 baby food pouches and even the baby brekkie choices.

We also try to keep our prices very competitive - for example we are currently selling the entire stage 1 range of purees at 85p each - thats less than tescos! Its only thanks to our customers buying so much Ella's Kitchen that we can pass on these prices so keep on buying and we'll do our best to stay the cheapest on the web!
Even if you would never dream of using commercial baby food at home the ease of use and transport of the Ella's Kitchen pouches make them ideal for taking on holiday with you or for meals out at a cafe. Pop a couple of pouches in your bag and you'll never be caught short again.
